The Future

What we need to continue our work

We have only a limited time left to us in our current facility (extending our lease seems unlikely), and with our membership steadily increasing, we have to think very carefully about our future.

Our experience with a rented building has taught us that renovations and construction to facilitate access for the handicapped cannot be done optimally because we do not own the building and because sufficient funds are not available. In addition, rents are ever on the rise in touristy Bali.

It would be best for Senang Hati to have its own land on which to build a centre that would include an art gallery and a swimming pool for therapy for the members. As many people in wheelchairs will be visiting the centre, we need a lot of space because we will have only a single floor. The centre will also need to be accessible to both members using a wheelchair and those with a visual handicap.

Building our New Centre

We need to purchase a plot of land, 30 are (one ‘are’ = one hundred square metres) in size, at a strategic location in central Bali. Ideally, it should not be too far from the current Senang Hati Centre. We will build our new centre on this land, as well as a swimming pool, art gallery and therapy facilities.

Secondary goals of the project

  • Make the centre an example for the whole of Indonesia of a fully handicapped-accessible building.
  • Ensure the continuity of the centre from an organisational and financial point of view.
  • Increase the facilities and materials available to our members.
  • Set up an arts and crafts gallery where we can sell the work of our members.
  • Build a swimming pool for water therapy.
  • Create more space so that more members can participate in our programmes.
  • Generate more income by selling more of the products made at the centre.
  • Make more ear moulds for hearing aids, conduct audiogrammes (hearing tests), and sell second-hand hearing aids.
